U510-B Pocket Bluetooth UHF RFID Reader for EPC Gen2 Tags

The U510-B is a pocket Bluetooth UHF RFID reader for staff who check EPC Gen2 (ISO 18000-6C) labels and tags on the move. It reads tags at 0–50 cm, depending on the tag, and types the tag ID into an app on iOS, Android or Windows over Bluetooth or a 2.4G USB dongle.

Frequency
915 MHz (UHF)
Cards / tags
ISO 18000-6C / EPC Gen2 UHF tags, labels and cards
Interface
Bluetooth (pairs without PIN); 2.4G wireless USB dongle
Output
8-digit hex (default); 10-digit decimal or 10-digit hex selectable
Read range
0–50 cm (depends on tag)

Why integrators choose the U510-B

  • UHF in the pocket housing — same one-button body as the H510-B card reader, but it reads ISO 18000-6C / EPC Gen2 tags instead of cards.
  • 0–50 cm read range — depending on the tag, enough to check a single labeled item without picking it up.
  • Keyboard-type output — pairs over Bluetooth without a PIN and types the tag ID into any app; no driver or SDK needed.
  • Adjustable output string — 8-digit hex by default, 10-digit decimal or 10-digit hex selectable, prefix/suffix up to 4 bytes, Enter appended.
  • Built-in 1000 mAh battery — 5 V charging, 100 mA working current, -20 °C to +70 °C operating range.

When a pocket UHF reader is the right tool

The U510-B is for close, single-item checks where a full handheld terminal is more than the job needs. Staff keep their own phone or tablet, open the inventory or asset app they already use, and read one tag at a time:

  • Looking up a tagged item on a shelf or in a returns bin.
  • Checking labels after they have been encoded on a desktop reader/writer such as the U120-U.
  • Confirming tagged tools, IT equipment or containers during a walk-round.

It is not the right choice for counting a room or a pallet at a distance. For reads up to 3 m, the pistol-grip U550-M fits better; for gates and dock doors, see the integrated long-range readers. Our guide to UHF read range explains why the same tag reads at different distances on different items.

Output string and frequency band

The reader types an 8-digit hex number followed by Enter unless set otherwise. It can also send 10-digit decimal or 10-digit hex, with a prefix or suffix of up to 4 bytes, for example a location code before each ID. Settings are made with the PC format-setting utility or preset before shipment.

If your software expects the full EPC string, send a sample tag and the value your system stores. We confirm the output before you order, so the IDs match the values already in your database.

The specification states 915 MHz. UHF bands differ by country (see UHF frequency bands by country), so give the destination country in your RFQ; the band is confirmed in your quotation.

Card, tag and system compatibility

Works with

  • ✓ISO 18000-6C / EPC Gen2 UHF labels, cards and tags: tag ID read at 0–50 cm
  • ✓iOS, Android and Windows hosts over Bluetooth; PCs through the 2.4G USB dongle
  • ✓Apps that accept keyboard input: inventory and asset apps, spreadsheets, web forms

Not designed for

  • ✕Writing or encoding UHF tags: use the U120-U desktop reader/writer
  • ✕13.56MHz NFC / MIFARE cards: use the H510-B
  • ✕Reading tags several meters away: see the U550-M (0–3 m)
  • ✕Control from your own app through an SDK: none is documented for this model

Integration in 4 steps

  1. 1

Charge the battery from a 5 V USB supply and press the button to switch the reader on.

  2. 2

Pair the U510-B from the Bluetooth settings of the phone, tablet or PC (no PIN), or plug the 2.4G dongle into a PC USB port.

  3. 3

Open your app, place the cursor in the input field and hold the reader toward the tag, within 0–50 cm; the tag ID is typed and Enter is sent.

  4. 4

Change output length, number base or prefix/suffix with the PC format-setting utility, or ask for the reader to be preset before shipment.

U510-B FAQ

Can the U510-B write or encode UHF tags?

No. It reads the tag ID only. Encode tags on a desktop reader/writer such as the U120-U, then check them in the field with the U510-B.

What does the U510-B type when it reads a tag?

By default an 8-digit hex number followed by Enter. You can select 10-digit decimal or 10-digit hex and add a prefix or suffix of up to 4 bytes. If your software needs the full EPC string, send us a sample tag and the expected value and we will confirm the output before you order.

Which UHF band does the U510-B use?

The specification states 915 MHz. Because permitted UHF bands differ by country, give the destination country in your RFQ; the band is confirmed in your quotation.

Does it work with an iPhone?

Yes. iOS is listed with Android and Windows. The reader pairs as a keyboard-type Bluetooth device without a PIN, so no app installation is needed.

How is the U510-B different from the H510-B?

They share the pocket housing, battery and Bluetooth/2.4G links. The H510-B reads 13.56MHz MIFARE and NTAG cards at 20–60 mm; the U510-B reads UHF EPC Gen2 tags at 0–50 cm.
