U540-M UHF RFID Handheld Reader with 1D/2D Barcode Scanner and OLED

The U540-M is a paddle-style handheld that combines a UHF RFID reader (ISO 18000-6C, 902–928 MHz) with a CMOS imager for 1D and 2D barcodes, so one device checks both tagged and barcoded items. It has an OLED display and connects to the host by USB cable, 2.4G wireless or Bluetooth.

Why integrators choose the U540-M

  • RFID and barcode in one device — reads ISO 18000-6C UHF tags and printed 1D/2D barcodes, so staff carry one tool on mixed sites.
  • Broad symbology support — QR Code, Data Matrix, PDF417, Aztec and MaxiCode; Code 128, EAN-13, UPC-A, Code 39, GS1 DataBar and more.
  • Band set for your market — 902–928 MHz as standard; the frequency is customizable.
  • On-device OLED display — built into the paddle head above the keypad.
  • USB, 2.4G or Bluetooth — cable, wireless receiver or Bluetooth link to the host.
  • Operating conditions — -20 °C to +70 °C and 5–85 % RH.

Why combine UHF RFID and barcode scanning

Few sites switch from barcodes to RFID in one step. During a phased rollout some items carry UHF tags, others only a printed code, and staff need to check both without changing devices. The U540-M covers that period: the paddle head holds the UHF antenna, and a CMOS imager reads 1D and 2D codes.

It also helps with label quality checks. Many RFID labels carry a printed barcode as well as the encoded chip. Reading both from the same label lets you confirm that the encoded tag matches the printed code before labels go into use.

Typical users are warehouse and retail integrators, asset-tracking software vendors and returnable-container programs that already rely on barcode workflows.

Before you order: range, band and host tests

UHF read distance depends on the tag, its orientation and the item it is fixed to. Measure the U540-M read range with your own tags on a sample unit before you order, so the figure you plan with is one you have seen. The UHF read range guide explains the main factors.

The reader ships for 902–928 MHz unless you ask for another band. Give the destination country in your RFQ; the band is confirmed in your quotation. No SDK is documented for this model, so agree the data format your host software receives during the sample stage.

The U540-M shares its paddle housing and barcode imager with the A540-M. Choose by tag type: UHF labels on goods need the U540-M; 134.2kHz FDX-B animal tags need the A540-M.

Card, tag and system compatibility

Works with

  • ✓ISO 18000-6C UHF tags and labels: tag ID read
  • ✓Printed 1D and 2D barcodes, including QR Code, Data Matrix, PDF417, Code 128 and EAN/UPC
  • ✓Host connection by USB cable, 2.4G wireless receiver or Bluetooth

Not designed for

  • ✕Writing or encoding UHF tags: use the U120-U desktop reader/writer
  • ✕134.2kHz animal tags: use the A540-M in the same housing
  • ✕13.56MHz NFC / MIFARE and 125kHz proximity cards
  • ✕Reader control from your own app through an SDK: none is documented for this model

Integration in 4 steps

  1. 1

Tell us the destination country, your tag type and the barcode symbologies you use; the reader ships for 902–928 MHz unless another band is agreed.

  2. 2

Connect the U540-M to the host by USB cable, 2.4G receiver or Bluetooth.

  3. 3

Aim the paddle face at the tag, or the imager window at the barcode, and trigger a read from the keypad.

  4. 4

Run a pilot with your own tags and labels to confirm read range and the data format your software receives.

U540-M FAQ

Can the U540-M read both barcodes and RFID tags?

Yes. It has a UHF reader for ISO 18000-6C tags and a CMOS imager for 1D and 2D barcodes such as QR Code, Data Matrix, PDF417, Code 128 and EAN-13.

What read range should I plan for?

It depends on the tag, how it is mounted and the item it sits on. Measure it with your own tags on a sample unit before you order; see the UHF read range guide for the factors involved.

Which frequency band does it use?

902–928 MHz as standard, and the band is customizable. Give the destination country in your RFQ; see UHF frequency bands by country.

Is the U540-M the same device as the A540-M?

Same paddle housing and barcode imager, different RFID reader. The A540-M reads 134.2kHz FDX-B and EMID animal tags; the U540-M reads UHF ISO 18000-6C tags.

Can it write UHF tags?

No. It reads tag IDs. For encoding, use the U120-U desktop reader/writer or the U610-M integrated reader with SDK.
