U610-M UHF Integrated RFID Reader, 7 dBi, 0–5 m, Wiegand/RS485/USB

The U610-M is a compact UHF RFID reader with a built-in 7 dBi antenna for single lanes, doorways and dock doors where the read zone should stay short. It reads EPC Gen2 tags at 0–5 m (up to 8 m in high-power mode) and outputs Wiegand 26/34/98, RS232/RS485 or USB from a 215 × 215 mm panel.

Why integrators choose the U610-M

  • Short, controlled read zone — 0–5 m with suitable EPC Gen2 tags, up to 8 m in high-power mode, with RF power adjustable from 0 to 30 dBm.
  • Controller-ready output — Wiegand 26, 34 or 98 goes straight to an access or parking controller, while RS232, RS485 and USB serve PC software.
  • Fast single-tag reads — under 6 ms on average per 64-bit read, and up to 140 single-tag reads per second.
  • Continuous or triggered reading — read all the time, or only when the trigger input receives a signal from a device such as a vehicle loop detector.
  • Lightest panel in the series — 215 × 215 × 50 mm and 0.8 kg, for pole or wall mounting on a bracket.
  • SDK for read/write — sample code in C#, Visual C++, VB, Java and Delphi, plus a demo for reading, writing and issuing tags.

Where the U610-M fits

The U610-M has the lowest antenna gain in our integrated UHF range, so its read zone is the shortest. That suits a read point where tags pass within a few meters and tags further away should be ignored: a staff parking entry where vehicles slow down at the barrier, a pedestrian gate with UHF cards, or a warehouse dock door where tagged pallets pass close to the panel. A lower-gain antenna also has a wider beam, so aim the panel at the pass point and trim RF power until only that zone reads.

If tags need to be read further out, move up to the U630-M (0–6 m) or the U640-M (beyond 12 m). Our UHF read range guide explains how tag type, mounting surface and RF power change the figures.

Output options: Wiegand, serial, USB or TCP/IP

Use Wiegand when an existing access or parking controller makes the decision. The U610-M supports Wiegand 26, 34 and 98. A Wiegand 26 frame carries only 24 data bits, so only part of a 96-bit EPC reaches the controller: agree which number the controller expects before you issue tags. See Wiegand 26 vs 34.

Use RS232, RS485 or USB when your own software reads the tag data through the SDK; RS485 is the usual choice for long cable runs. The U610-N (E-type) adds TCP/IP Ethernet for readers that report to a server on the site network.

U610-M or U620-M?

Both are rated for 0–5 m (up to 8 m in high-power mode). Choose the U610-M for the smaller, lighter panel (215 mm and 0.8 kg, against 240 mm and 1.2 kg) or when your controller needs Wiegand 98, which is listed only for the U610-M. Choose the U620-M when you want the 8 dBi antenna: its narrower beam gives more link margin on difficult tags at the same distance and less spill to the sides.

Card, tag and system compatibility

Works with

  • ✓ISO 18000-6C / EPC Gen2 passive UHF tags: labels, cards, windshield tags and hard tags
  • ✓Access and parking controllers with a Wiegand 26, 34 or 98 input
  • ✓PC software over RS232, RS485 or USB, using the SDK
  • ✓Networked software over TCP/IP (U610-N only)
  • ✓902–928 MHz or 865–868 MHz operation, ordered per band

Not designed for

  • ✕125 kHz or 13.56 MHz cards such as EM4100, MIFARE or NFC — see 125kHz readers and 13.56MHz readers
  • ✕Active (battery-powered) tags
  • ✕Writing tags over Wiegand — writing needs the SDK or demo over serial, USB or TCP/IP
  • ✕Long lanes beyond 8 m — use the U640-M or U650-M
  • ✕Power over Ethernet (not listed; use a DC 9–12 V supply)

Integration in 4 steps

  1. 1

Fix the reader on its pole or wall bracket, facing the lane or doorway, and aim the panel at the point where tags pass.

  2. 2

Connect DC 9–12 V power and the interface you need: Wiegand D0/D1 to the controller, RS485 or RS232 to a PC, or USB to a PC at short distance. On the U610-N, connect Ethernet for TCP/IP.

  3. 3

In the demo software, set RF power (0–30 dBm), continuous or triggered reading and the frequency mode; agree the Wiegand format (26, 34 or 98) with your controller.

  4. 4

Test with the tags you will deploy at the final mounting position, then integrate the SDK or let the controller act on the Wiegand number.

U610-M FAQ

How far does the U610-M read?

0–5 m with suitable EPC Gen2 tags, and up to 8 m in high-power mode. The result depends on tag size and type, what the tag is mounted on and the RF power you set (0–30 dBm). For longer lanes, look at the U640-M.

Can the U610-M write UHF tags?

Yes. Through the SDK or the demo software over RS232, RS485, USB or TCP/IP (U610-N), it reads and writes ISO 18000-6C / EPC Gen2 tags, and the demo includes a tag-issuing function. The Wiegand output only sends data to the controller, so it cannot be used for writing.

What is the difference between the U610-M and the U610-N?

The U610-M (N-type) has Wiegand 26/34/98, RS232/RS485 and USB. The U610-N (E-type) adds a TCP/IP Ethernet port. Both use the same 215 × 215 × 50 mm housing and 7 dBi antenna.

How fast does the U610-M read a single tag?

Under 6 ms on average for a 64-bit read, with up to 140 single-tag reads per second. The read timing can be changed in the configuration software.
