Why integrators choose the U630-M

  • Rated from -40 °C to +65 °C — built for cold outdoor sites, with storage from -45 °C to +95 °C.
  • 0–6 m, up to 10 m — a 9 dBi antenna and 0–30 dBm RF power cover a full vehicle lane.
  • Timed or external-trigger reading — scan at a set interval, or read only when the trigger input sees a loop detector or photo-beam.
  • Tag issuing demos — the software package has a test demo plus automatic tag-writing and tag-reading demos for issuing tags before installation.
  • Slim 42 mm panel — 257 × 257 × 42 mm and 1.45 kg, with four mounting studs on the rear plate for the pole or wall bracket.
  • Wiegand 26/34 plus serial — Wiegand to the controller, RS232/RS485 or USB to software, TCP/IP on the U630-N.

Installing the U630-M at a gate

Mount the reader higher than 1.8 m, on a pole of 40–60 mm diameter or on a wall, and tilt the panel toward the point where the tag passes. The metal rear plate has four studs for the bracket, and an arrow marks the top edge. The cables leave through two glands on the lower edge.

At cold sites, allow the reader about 15 minutes after power-on to warm up before you rely on its reads. Keep metal signs, barrier arms and parked vehicles out of the direct field where you can; our read range guide covers what else shortens range.

Timed reading or external trigger

In timed automatic mode the reader scans at a set interval and reports the tags it finds. That suits a gate where every tagged vehicle in range should be logged. In external-trigger mode it reads only when the trigger input is activated, for example by a loop detector under the lane. That keeps the reader quiet between vehicles and reduces reads from traffic passing on the road. Both modes are selected in the configuration software.

Issuing tags with the demo software

The software package includes a test demo and automatic tag-writing and tag-reading demos, so you can number windshield tags or cards before they are handed out. For batch issuing at a desk, the U120-U desktop reader/writer is easier to handle. The UHF tag writing guide explains the EPC, TID and user memory banks.

Card, tag and system compatibility

Works with

  • ✓ISO 18000-6C / EPC Gen2 passive UHF tags: windshield tags, cards, labels and hard tags
  • ✓Access and parking controllers with a Wiegand 26 or 34 input
  • ✓External devices such as loop detectors or photo-beams on the trigger input
  • ✓PC software over RS232, RS485 or USB via the SDK; server software over TCP/IP (U630-N)

Not designed for

  • ✕125 kHz or 13.56 MHz cards — see 125kHz readers and 13.56MHz readers
  • ✕Controllers that need Wiegand 98 — the U610-M lists it
  • ✕Active (battery-powered) tags
  • ✕Writing tags over Wiegand — use the demo or SDK over serial, USB or TCP/IP

Integration in 4 steps

  1. 1

Fit the bracket to the four rear studs and mount the reader above 1.8 m on a 40–60 mm pole or a wall, top edge up as marked.

  2. 2

Bring the cables through the glands: DC 12 V, 3 A power, Wiegand D0/D1 to the controller or RS485/RS232 to the PC, and the trigger input if a loop detector is used.

  3. 3

In the demo software, choose timed or external-trigger reading and set RF power so the reader covers only the intended lane.

  4. 4

At cold sites, let the reader warm up for about 15 minutes after power-on, then test with real tagged vehicles before handover.

U630-M FAQ

Can the U630-M work in freezing conditions?

Yes. It is rated to operate from -40 °C to +65 °C and to be stored from -45 °C to +95 °C. In cold climates, allow about 15 minutes after power-on for the reader to warm up.

How high should the U630-M be mounted?

Above 1.8 m, on a pole of 40–60 mm diameter or on a wall, tilted toward the point where the tag passes. Mount it with the arrow on the rear plate pointing up.

What does the trigger input do?

In external-trigger mode, the reader reads only while the trigger input is active, for example when a loop detector senses a vehicle. In timed mode, it scans at a set interval without a trigger.

How is the U630-M different from the U620-M?

The U630-M has a 9 dBi antenna and is rated for 0–6 m (10 m in high-power mode), against 8 dBi and 0–5 m (8 m) for the U620-M. Its housing is larger but thinner, at 257 × 257 × 42 mm, and it is rated down to -40 °C.
